Dear Readers,
In this post I would like to take you step by step through the new addition to the garden: a composter built from old wooden pallets.
We needed to build something to hold the completed compost from the tumbling barrel composter since we are starting to churn out more green waste and generating more compost.
JimJim didn’t want the compost to sit directly on the ground and we wanted something to keep the dogs out of the heap so JimJim (with my help and the help from our neighbor) built this compost bin using wooden pallets that we had picked up.
Remember health & safety when building and take care when operating machinery.
Step 1
Lay out the pallets then place one on top to make a side.
Step 2
Secure the upright pallet with screws.
Step 3
Place another pallet upright on the other side of the base pallet and secure in place in the same way.
Step 4
Place a third pallet to the back of the composter ans secure at points along the length of the pallet.
Step 5
Once secure, if you want to close the gaps in the pallets, slot in some suitably sized timber. We reduced the gaps in the bottom and back to reduce the dogs getting in the pile and to stop the compost from going on the ground. We offset some timber on the sides to allow for some air circulation and to reduce bits falling out of the sides.
Step 6
Attach half a pallet to the front to stop the compost from falling out, remember though you will need to empty the composter when it is ready.
Fill with green waste and let nature turn it into compost.
