Over the last year or so we have all done a lot of cleaning! But store-bought cleaners can be expensive, the natural and green cleaners especially so! The good news is that you can have the benefit of natural cleaning products, without the hefty price tag!
DIY Cleaner Essentials
Homemade cleaners use some basic ingredients. Make sure you have a stash of these essential ingredients for your cleaning products:
- Distilled white vinegar with 5% acidity
- Essential oils
- Baking soda is also known as bicarbonate of soda
- Liquid castile soap
- Vodka
Make The Best of DIY Cleaning Products
When you make your own natural cleaners and DIY cleaning sprays, you will need a few things to make the most out of the batch you are making. Have a number of spray bottles and a way to label them to hand so you don’t mix up your DIY cleaning spray products. Try different colored bottles or triggers so you can tell the difference.
Glass jars also come in handy for keeping powdered DIY cleaners in them or mixing up cleaning recipes.
Go Green
You might wish to ditch the plastic and paper towels as you start making your own cleaners. Whilst plastic cleaning brushes are cheaper, there are now eco-friendly and plastic-free options available like bamboo, sisal, and coir brushes and scrubbers to help clean your homestead.
If you are handy with the sewing machine, try making your own unpaper towels and reusable cleaning cloths. If you knit or crochet you can get pretty cotton yarn and lovely dishcloth and scrubby patterns to make your own. Reusable cleaning cloths can be cleaned in the laundry on a hot or sanitizing wash then dried so they are ready to use again.
DIY Cleaning Spray Recipes
There are so many DIY cleaning spray recipes out there, mostly the scent changes and you can make your DIY cleaning spray smell the way you want it to! An essential oil set will help you switch things up as you want plus if you get into soap making as a homesteading skill, you have essential oils you can use!
All-Purpose Vinegar Cleaning Spray
Perfect for lots of different surfaces but not for certain stone countertops. If your counter is marble, soapstone, sandstone, granite, or anything you are unsure of, use another cleaner without the vinegar. The vinegar can dissolve the stone leaving etch marks and ruin the finish of your counter.
To make the spray, mix 13 oz hot water, 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar (5%), 10 drops of lavender, and 20 drops of lemon or another citrus essential oil in a spray bottle.
Spray on the surface then wipe away with a clean cloth.
The Easiest All-Purpose DIY Cleaning Spray Without Vinegar
This is one of my go-to cleaning spray recipes when I’m super busy cleaning. Like when I’m moving across the country and the realtor is coming to take pictures and list the house for example!
To make it add 1/4 cup of castile soap to a quart of water in a spray bottle. Shake to mix. Spray on the surface then wipe away with a clean damp cloth.
Use a scented liquid castile soap to save time!
Vinegar-Free All-Purpose Cleaning Spray Recipe
If you have unscented castile soap, you can make this all-purpose DIY cleaning spray a little tougher with some essential oils. Mix together 1/4 cup vodka, 2 cups distilled water, 1/4 cup unscented castile soap, 15 drops of lavender essential oil, and 10 drops of tea tree essential oil in a spray bottle. Shake gently to mix together then spray on the surface and wipe off with a damp cloth.
DIY Bathroom Cleaners
Keep your bathroom squeaky clean with these DIY cleaning recipes.
DIY General Bathroom Cleaner
Need something for tub and tile? Fill a jar with 1.5 cups baking soda, 1/2 cup warm water, 1/2 cup liquid dish soap, 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar (5%), and a dash of lemon juice. Stir it to mix well.
Use it to scrub the bathtub, shower, grout, even tile floor. Rinse off the surface with clean water after scrubbing thoroughly.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Freshen up the toilet bowl by mixing 1 cup of baking soda with 15 drops of tea tree or pine essential oil and 15 drops of orange or lemon essential oils. Sprinkle the mixture all around and in the bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes. Grab your toilet bowl brush and scrub all around the bowl before flushing the cleaner away.
DIY Floor Cleaner Recipes
Whether you have carpet or hardwood floors, there’s a DIY cleaner for it!
DIY Carpet Deodorizer
Carpets and rugs sometimes need a refresh. Especially if you have a pet or two. One of the easiest carpet deodorizers can be made with some baking soda and essential oils. Grab a quart-size mason jar and add 2 cups of baking soda. Add 10-15 drops of essential oil. Place the lid on your jar and screw the lid on. Then shake the jar thoroughly for a few minutes to distribute the oils.
To use it, sprinkle the powder lightly onto the carpet and let it sit there for 15 to 30 mins. Then vacuum the carpet.
Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap (washing up liquid) into a gallon of warm water. Use the liquid to mop the floor.
General Floor Cleaner
Mix 1/2 cup castile soap in 3 gallons of hot water. Use to mop or scrub and mop hard floor surfaces like tile, wood, or linoleum.
Use a scented liquid castile soap to save time and make things smell good, or add 20 – 30 drops of your favorite essential oils.
