Best Tasting Winter Squash Varieties You Need To Grow
Growing great tasting food is completely within your reach when you grow a garden, especially a garden from seeds! Expand your culinary horizons with these winter squashes to grow and see which you love most!
1. Candystick Dessert Delicata Squash
Thick, sumptuously sweet flesh, rich in a date-like flavor. The Candystick Dessert delicata winter squash makes some of the best pies, muffins and anything else you might make with pumpkin in fall.
The plants produce vigorous vines and tan-orange skinned fruits with attractive green stripes in about 90 days. This variety of delicata squash produces both long boat shapes and short, squat loaf-shaped fruits that keep well once cured and still retain their sweetness even in storage.

2. Thelma Sanders Acorn Squash
Creamy tan acorn fruits are produced on strong vines in about 90 days. This squash is also called Thelma Sanders’ Sweet Potato Squash because of the fact that the flesh is a golden orange like a sweet potato.

3. Marina di Chioggia
The Italian Sea Pumpkin is a delicious and versatile squash. The amber-colored flesh is on the drier side and it roasts up beautifully in sweet and savory dishes. This is my favorite to grow although my family finds the green, warty skin off-putting.
Ready in about 95 days, the Marina di Chioggia is a productive vine producing warty turban or buttercup type fruits weighing up to 10lbs!

4. Blue Hubbard
Sometimes, bigger is better and in 110 days you too can be harvesting the Blue Hubbard squash! Blue Hubbard is great tasting and great for storing through winter, up to 6 months.
The fruits can weigh 15 to 40 lbs so you might need help wrangling this one into the kitchen but it is definitely worth it.

5. Ute Indian
Another turban/buttercup type squash that is ready in about 95 days. The Ute Indian squash is drought tolerant and has a grey-blue skin and thick yellow flesh. It grew well here in Utah as part of a 3 sisters garden with beans and corn.
It’s quite hard to find but great to eat roasted or grilled.

6. Turk’s Turban Squash
Gorgeous yellows, oranges, and greens decorate the skin of the colorful turban squash. Vines produce fruits weighing up to 5 lbs and are mature in around 95 days, Turks Turban squash grows well over a squash arch in smaller garden spaces.

7. Sweet Meat Oregon Homestead
Big vines producing 3 to 4 big, blue fruits weighing 10 to 20 lbs each make the Oregon Homestead squash great for homestead production. They also store well too!

8. Candy Roaster North Georgia
The unique coloring of the sweet peachy banana squash with blue-green tips make it fun on the table before it gets cooked!
The fruits weigh in up to 10 lbs and are perfect in pies, fried or roasted. I turned mine into chutney and it’s delicious with ham or sharp cheddar cheese.
