Tasty Tomatoes

tomatoes to grow

There’s nothing quite like having a fresh tomato right off the vine from your homestead vegetable garden.  We grow heirloom tomatoes and the taste is so much more intense than anything you get from the grocery store and the wonderful thing about growing your own is that you can try new varieties.  Each year we try to grow different shapes, sizes and taste and have tried growing both heirloom and hybrid varieties over the years..  We’re very driven by taste when it comes to tomatoes, so much so I blindfolded by husband for this taste test video:

We grow fresh eating and canning types of tomato in our garden and with a bit of trial and error we now know how many tomato plants to grow to be able to eat fresh and can enough tomatoes to last through to the following year.  It’s 12 tomato plants by the way, for the 3 of us…and in case you were wondering, we can in quarts for our tomato sauce :).

The Purple Cherokee is one of our favorite varieties to grow.  The flavor is deep and the tomatoes are unusual in appearance with green-pink-purple coloring and flat appearance.  An amazing variety to turn into sauces, ketchup and soup or to eat raw in a fresh caprese salad.

2.  Black Krim Tomato

Type: Slicing

Indeterminate

A unique flavored heirloom tomato which is great for fresh eating and cooking with.  These plants grow well in containers, great for gardeners in smaller spaces.  These tomatoes are one of my favorites to grow and eat and although they are suburb as a fresh eating tomato I love to roast them and turn them into pasta sauce.

I may have gotten carried away with the Easy Ferme I may have gotten carried away with the Easy Fermenter. Means I can make delicious fermented foods easily on an evening after work.

A gallon of my spicy kimchi using last year's dried pepper harvest, 1/2 gallon of pickles and soon some lemon dill sauerkraut followed by spicy fermented green beans.

The 1/4 acre of untamed raspberries that I've been picking over the last couple of weeks have resulted in a couple of gallons of berries in the freezer, 8 8oz jars of jam and several pints of fresh eating for us and the neighbors not to mention those eaten whilst picking 😄

Now it's time to leave what's left for the birds who will help keep the pests in check. What seems a mess in the yard can be a haven for pollinators and your garden pest police.
